Bonnel 775 MX Wireless Shifting Kit: True 5-Speed
Hi Power Cycles just released a Bonnel 775 MX wireless shifting kit that turns the platform's stock single speed into a true 5-speed transmission — and based on the reaction since it went live on our Instagram and Facebook, we weren't the only ones who wanted it. The story behind it is a familiar one around our Simi Valley shop: a customer walked in and told us to "make this bike actually pedal-able." A few months of R&D later, we had a kit ready to ship.
Why the Stock Bonnel 775 MX Needed a Real Gear Range
A lightweight mid-drive motor like the one powering the Bonnel 775 MX can only do so much when it's locked to a single gear. Without a proper spread of ratios, the motor either struggles on climbs or spins out on flat ground and descents — there's no sweet spot. That's the gap this kit closes, and it's why we built it as a direct evolution of the 5-speed, electronically shifted drivetrain we already run on our own HPC Revolution MX. It isn't an experimental one-off; it's a proven setup adapted to fit the 775 MX platform.
What's in the Kit
- Hand-built rear wheel — WTB i35 rim laced to an HPC custom 148x12 hub with a steel driver, using Sapim 12-gauge spokes that we cold-roll and cut in-house.
- CYC 5-speed CNC cassette, engineered specifically for the torque output of a CYC mid-drive system.
- OX custom-programmed wireless shifter and derailleur, tuned for 5-speed operation with a strong clutch for chain retention — no cables to route or tune.
- Shimano heavy-duty 9-speed e-bike chain, with anti-corrosion treatment and reduced stretch under load.
Less Weight, More Torque, More Control
In the announcement, we told riders the kit adds up to less weight, more torque, more top-end speed, and noticeably more control off-road compared to riding the 775 MX single-speed — and that lines up with what proper gearing does for any e-MTB platform. Keeping the motor in its efficient RPM band instead of forcing it to cover the whole speed range in one ratio also means better efficiency, so the same battery should carry you farther per charge.
Every kit is built around our own cassette and chain components, using the same in-house wheel-building process we use across our bike components lineup. Because each wheel is hand-built to order, please plan on the kit taking time to build and ship — CYC cassette supply has had periodic delays, and our own wheel-building queue adds to that. It's worth the wait for a wheel that's stronger and truer than anything off the shelf.
