Ferrofluid Cooling on Our 10kW Hub Motor

Ferrofluid being installed into the copper windings of a 10kW e-bike hub motor

Ever wondered how a high-power e-bike motor stays cool under serious load? In our latest clip we go behind the scenes for a POV ferrofluid install on our 10kW hub motor — the kind of in-house engineering that separates a Hi Power Cycles build from an off-the-shelf e-bike.

The video opens the motor right up: copper windings, stator, and controller board on full display, with a hand carefully adding a dark liquid as the caption asks, “What is ferrofluid?”

So, what is ferrofluid?

Ferrofluid is a dark liquid that’s attracted to the poles of a magnet. It’s a colloidal liquid made of nanoscale ferromagnetic (or ferrimagnetic) particles suspended inside a carrier fluid. Inside a hub motor, it clings to the magnetic gaps and dramatically improves heat transfer between the hot internal components and the motor shell.

Why it matters for your ride

  • Cooler running: Better heat transfer means the motor sheds heat faster under hard use.
  • Integrated heatsink: Pair the ferrofluid with the built-in heatsink on our new motor and you’ve got a genuinely cooler-running system.
  • More sustained power: A cooler motor can hold its output longer on big climbs and long, hard efforts.
  • Built in-house: This is the kind of detail we obsess over so your bike performs when it counts.

Power you can feel

This is the same obsessive engineering that goes into our high-power hub-motor builds like the Revolution X. If you love the tech as much as the ride, explore the full Revolution lineup, our e-bike conversion kits, and everything else in the electric bikes collection.
