E-Bike Throttles Compared: Half-Twist, Thumb and Lekkie Pacemaker Full-Twist

The throttle is the part of a high-power e-bike you touch every second of every ride, so the style matters as much as the spec. HPC sells four throttles that cover most builds: a half-twist, a universal thumb throttle, a Nucular thumb throttle that doubles as a regen lever, and the Lekkie Pacemaker full-twist. This guide compares how each one feels, what it plugs into and who it suits, using the details on each product page.
The four throttles at a glance
| Throttle | Style | Price | Plugs into |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half Twist Throttle (36V-100V) | Half-twist grip | $30 to $35 depending on connector | HPC systems, with a choice of 3-pin waterproof Higo (female), 3-pin JST (male) or 4-pin JST (male) |
| Universal Thumb Throttle | Thumb lever, left or right mount | $30 | HPC controllers and Bafang kits |
| Nucular Universal Thumb Throttle / Regen Lever | Thumb lever for throttle or regen | $28 | Nucular controllers, via the on-board computer |
| Lekkie Pacemaker Full Twist | CNC full-twist with lock-on grips | $115 | Bafang mid-drives, Sur-Ron, Talaria and other twist-throttle applications |
Half-twist throttle: simple and inexpensive
A half-twist throttle is a short twist grip that sits beside your normal grip. The HPC version is rated for 36V to 100V and is described as plug and play with HPC systems, with more sensing points and a robust spring for better control. The wire is about 40 inches long. The main thing to get right is the connector: pick the 3-pin waterproof Higo (female) at $30, or the 3-pin or 4-pin JST (male) at $35, to match your controller or harness. Availability varies by connector, so check the product page before you order.
Thumb throttle: compact and flexible
A thumb throttle is a small lever you push with your thumb, which keeps your fingers wrapped around the grip and on the brake levers. The Universal Thumb Throttle mounts on either the left or right side and is direct plug and play for HPC controllers and Bafang kits. It is a good choice when handlebar space is tight, when you want it on the left side, or when you want a throttle that is easy to feel and easy to swap.
If you run a Nucular controller, the Nucular Universal Thumb Throttle / Regen Lever is made for it. It has a 40 cm wire with a PHD 2.0 4P connector that plugs into the throttle (THR) or brake (BRK) port on the Nucular on-board computer, so it works as either a throttle or a modular regen control. Our guide to adding regen braking with the Nucular thumb throttle goes deeper. HPC now builds every new build and kit on the Nucular X6F controller, which is the controller this throttle is designed to pair with.
Lekkie Pacemaker: a full-twist for precise control
The Lekkie Pacemaker is a CNC full-twist throttle with a matching left lock-on grip. It is designed to fit under your shifters so you can keep changing gears, and it has a blue LED that shows when the throttle system is active. The soft black grips can be swapped for a harder grey set, the end cap is full plastic to survive drops, and the parts are electrically sealed for all-weather use. It is a motorcycle-style input that many riders find more natural for smooth power on a high-torque mid-drive, and it also suits Sur-Ron and Talaria-style bikes. We cover it in detail in our Lekkie Pacemaker upgrade guide and the shorter Pacemaker overview. Read the user manual for installation notes before you fit it.
Which style should you choose?
- You want the lowest cost and a classic twist feel: the Half Twist Throttle. Match the connector to your system.
- You want a left or right mount and compact controls: the Universal Thumb Throttle.
- You run a Nucular build and want regen too: the Nucular thumb throttle / regen lever.
- You ride a high-torque mid-drive and want the most precise, durable twist: the Lekkie Pacemaker.
Thumb throttles leave your whole grip free, but a twist throttle uses a wrist motion many riders already know from motorcycles, which can give finer control. Neither is right for everyone, so choose the one that feels natural on your own bike.
Install basics
- Match the connector first. Look at the plug on your controller or harness before you choose a throttle or a connector option.
- Check voltage. The Half Twist Throttle is listed for 36V to 100V. Confirm voltage and connector for the other throttles with your controller before you buy.
- Mind your hand position. Make sure the throttle does not collide with shifters, brake levers or a display. The Pacemaker is designed to sit under your shifters.
- Test with the wheel off the ground before the first ride, and make sure the throttle returns to zero by itself.
