Hand-Built E-Bike Wheels: Spokes, Nipples and Rims That Survive High Power

On a high-power e-bike, the wheel takes a beating that a standard bicycle wheel never sees: more weight, more torque and higher speeds. The parts that decide whether a wheel stays true are the ones you cannot see from a distance, namely the e-bike spokes, the nipples and the rim. This guide explains how we approach those parts at Hi Power Cycles, what we sell for wheel building and repair, and which replacement wheels fit which HPC bike.
Why standard spokes struggle on an e-bike
Motor torque and extra weight load spokes repeatedly. Thin, low-grade spokes stretch and fatigue, and once a few break the wheel goes out of true. Our earlier article, How to Build a Bombproof E-Bike Wheel, covers the basics. The short version is that thicker spokes and stronger nipples are the foundation of a wheel that lasts.
12g and 13g spokes
We stock heavy-duty spokes in two gauges and cut them to your length in-house.
- Phil Wood 12g black spokes and Phil Wood 12g stainless silver spokes: each spoke is hand-rolled to your size on our in-house Phil Wood spoke machine, in any length from 50mm to 300mm. Add your length in the order notes. Ordering 10 or more earns an automatic 10% discount.
- 13g stainless steel spokes (pack of 5) and 13g black Sapim spokes (pack of 5): custom cut, with the stainless version available in lengths from 50mm to 216mm.
If you are unsure what length you need, contact us and we will help you work it out. Measure or tell us the hub and rim you are using before you order.
Nipples matter as much as spokes
Nipples are sold in packs of 10, and the gauge has to match the spoke.
- Phil Wood 12g silver nipples and Phil Wood 12g black nipples. The black version is the nipple we run on our Revolution X.
- 13g silver brass nipples: 12mm total length, made to fit 13g spokes.
- Sapim 14g silver nipples and Sapim 14g black nipples: the black pack is the nipple we use on our Pro line of bikes.
As we noted in our earlier article, brass nipples resist corrosion and hold tension better than aluminum, which can corrode and round off under stress.
Rims we use
Our hand-built replacement wheels are laced with Phil Wood stainless steel spokes. The rim depends on the bike:
- Scout: Alex MD40 rim. Front hub is a SRAM 700-series, and the rear is a custom e-bike 148x12mm hub with a Shimano driver.
- Scout Pro: Spank OozyTrail 395+ rims with a SRAM 900 hub, and the rear is 12 x 148mm with a Shimano driver.
- Titan Pro: Alex Blizzerk 90 rims with a DT Swiss DT350 hub, 20 x 110mm front and 12 x 197mm rear.
- Revolution X DH front wheel: hand-built with a Supra 35 rim, a 20x110 hub and Phil Wood spokes.

- Replacing a whole wheel: choose the replacement wheel made for your bike.
Bikes at very high power are intended for private land and off-road use, and laws vary by location, so check your local regulations before riding on public roads.
