How to Upgrade to a Shimano SLX 1x12 Drivetrain (Cassette, Derailleur & Shifter)

Its BEAM SPIDER construction keeps the cassette light and stiff to reduce rotating inertia, and the 10T small cog is made possible by Micro Spline — so your freehub body must be Micro Spline compatible.

2. Shimano SLX 1x12 Rear Derailleur (RD-M7100-SGS)

The long-cage RD-M7100-SGS derailleur handles the full 10–51T spread and uses Shadow RD+ clutch stabilization plus a larger 13T pulley to keep the chain quiet and planted on rough terrain. The clutch matters even more on an e-bike, where extra torque and speed make chain slap and drops more likely.

3. Shimano SLX 12-Speed Shifter (SL-M7100)

The right-hand SL-M7100 trigger shifter uses RapidFire Plus and 2-Way Release for light, fast actuation — Shimano rates it at roughly 35% less shifting force than the previous SL-M7000. You can also dump multiple gears in a single push, which is handy when a climb comes up fast.

You'll also need a 12-speed Micro Spline-compatible chain to complete the group.

Compatibility checklist

• Freehub: Must be Micro Spline to run the 10T cassette. This is the most common thing builders overlook.
• Chain: Use a 12-speed chain matched to the HYPERGLIDE+ cassette.
• Hanger: Confirm your frame or hub uses a standard derailleur hanger the RD-M7100 can bolt to.
• Cable: The SL-M7100 shifter runs a standard shift cable to the derailleur.

Suggested install order

1. Mount the cassette to the Micro Spline freehub and torque the lockring to spec.
2. Bolt on the rear derailleur and set the B-tension and limit screws.
3. Install the shifter on the bar, route the cable, and run the chain.
